叉烧 (Cha Shao) is sort of barbecued pork and is another must-eat dish in Hong Kong. If you wanna test how would you like Cha Shao, you can try “叉烧包” (Cha Shao Bao) first, which has “Cha Shao” inside the Bao and is served in every Dim Sum restaurant. Also it is said that one will know how the Dim Sum restaurant is simply by having their Cha Shao Bao.

As for barbeque, the sauce is vital to make the Cha Shao a pleasure or a disaster. And the sauce for Cha shao including: thin soy sauce, garlic chopped, malt sugar, five-spice powder, wine, ermented soy beancurd and etc. Most of them are typical Chinese sauce ingredients and make a sweet glaze covering the soft meat.

If you get a chance to watch how the chief cook it, you will notice they hang up the pork inside the roaster and brush the sauce on it agian and again, by doing this, the oil will come out and drop on the fore during process and the final products will become less oily and more savory.

叉烧包 (Cha Shao Bao), the most common and also famous Dim Sum made of Cha Shao.

叉烧饭 (Cha Shao and Rice) is simple but enough to satisfy your stomach. Place the well cooked Cha Shao on steamed rice, at last scoop a spoonful Cha Shao sauce on it.

叉烧面(Dry Cha Shao Noodle), similar with cha Shao Rice, the main difference is Cha Shao is placed on noodle instead of rice. The noodle is usually thinner than the normal one, and severed together with green vegies.

Curry Fish Ball is one of the most popular street snacks in Hong Kong. You will know how much locals love this snack by walking along the roadside and counting how many stalls are selling it.

Actually, it’s just 4 or 5 fish balls on a stick which you then dip it into the provided hot curry sauce. Well, a tasty Curry Fish ball does not as simple as it looks like.

You not simply put the fish ball into the curry sauce and then boil them. A chewy fish ball is important, and the cooking hour is as important. If cook too long, the fish ball will become hard and lose chewy feeling; if not long enough, it will taste plain because the curry yet to penetrate it.

And the curry also makes a big difference. It’s not very spicy and tastes more like curry powder. But it is said that the curry sauce is made from herb and a lot of other ingredients, thus it tastes rich and fresh.

A stick of 4 or 5 balls is only at around HK$10, and it’s really yummy!
